The total cost of the project will be just over forty million euros. This will be paid by the Regge en Dinkel district water board, the province of Overijssel and the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries. In addition subsidies have been applied for from the European Union.
De Doorbraak will be an ecological connection zone in which the stream is the driving force of natural developments within the zone. The zone will be some 75 metres wide. Plans are for water and nature to develop in harmony with one another. Under normal water drainage conditions the stream will be approximately 5 to 10 metres wide. As a result of very heavy precipitation, it is expected that at times the stream will run out of its bed and become as wide as maximally some 75 metres. On average this may happen once a year.
The overall plans have now been made. But quite a few town and country planning procedures still have to be gone through, land must be purchased, etc. Quite a bit still has to be worked out before the first shovel hits the ground. The goal is to have clean rural water flowing through De Doorbraak by 2014.
The exposure draft zoning plan and the layout plan of De Doorbraak have been available for perusal. You can find these reports at nieuws/actueel/archief. The public comments have already come in. The district water board and the province of Overijssel issue a newsletter three times a year concerning the progress of the project. The most recent newsletter has also been published at the above mentioned site. If you'd like to be kept up to date on this project, you can register to receive the newsletter.
